Safe Waste Disposal
Hazardous materials include asbestos, chemicals, sharps and more.
There are a range of waste materials that have properties that make them hazardous or potentially harmful to the health of residents and the environment.
Lachlan Shire Council participates in national initiatives that are designed to help residents dispose of some of these hazardous wastes.
Asbestos
SafeWork NSW is the controlling authority regarding the removal of asbestos. Issues relating to the identification, handling and removal of asbestos is governed by the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011.
Lachlan Shire Council plays an important role in ensuring safe and healthy conditions for people within the Council area.
The removal of asbestos will usually require an approval from Council. Where approvals are required, a licensed person must undertake any works involving materials suspected of containing asbestos. Very small quantities of bonded asbestos can be removed by a non-licensed person but the requirements of the Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos 200 still apply and must be complied with.
Complaints in regards to inappropriate handling of asbestos or asbestos containing material can be referred to SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50, by email to contact@safework.nsw.gov.au or refer to their website, here. Other matters should be referred to Council for investigation.
